On June 4/17, we commemorate St. Sophia of Thrace, Mother of Orphans. St. Sophia lived in Thrace (or Ainos) in what is today Eastern Greece and Southern Bulgaria. She gives us an example of a faithful wife and mother, and for most of her adult life, widower and caretaker for orphans and the poor. A faithful woman, full of prayer and love, she gained eternal life, even in this life, by humbly serving others for the sake Christ, her loving Master.

On a personal note, St. Sophia is my daughter’s patron Saint.
