This reading contains excerpts from St. Ignatius’ essay “On Miracles and Signs.” The reason for this recording is to raise the awareness and discernment of Orthodox Christians regarding the degree of deception manifested first in the spirit of Antichrist, which is increasingly obvious in the world, and secondly in the Antichrist himself, who will be the fulfillment of “the spiritual direction of man.”

St. Ignatius Brianchaninov (1807–1867) served as Bishop in the Caucuses near the Black Sea and is best known as a prolific author of Orthodox Christian ascetical works. Published toward the end of his life, his writings continued to grow in popularity long after his death. Along with his contemporary, St. Theophan the Recluse, St. Ignatius is now considered a foremost authority on Orthodox spirituality. He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988. His writings have previously appeared in English as The Arena and On the Prayer of Jesus, among other works.

Very timely, and from one of my dearest Fathers, St. Ignatius. It is important to clarify a point made more obscure by this reading: the Antichrist is referred to in the singular, as one Beast, when in fact Revelations describes two. There is a great deal of debate and confusion on this point, but I can prove how to divide the truth from the speculation. Succinctly, contemporary Jewish sources offer a clear vision of what lies before us. It is in exact parallel to the book of Revelations, chapter 13. The first Beast , incorrectly alluded to by the Russian saint as the singular Beast, and hence the actual Antichrist, is actually his political forerunner and ruling viceroy, the Mashiach ben Yossef (aka Vladimir Putin). Many Orthodox sources place emphasis on him, but they are simply using human and worldly wisdom instead of a peceptive reading of the literal Scripture. For example, one supposed Orthodox authority claims that the second Beast, arising from the Earth and having to horns like a Lamb (*hint*) is actually the forerunner of the Fist Beast. He cannot seem to explain how, if he is supposed to come first in reality, he shows up second in the vision of St. John. Turning all blotchy and clearing their throats, they point vaguely to "Tradition". What does the clearest and earliest representative of actual patristic tradition say on this subject, though?
Hippolytus of Rome (c. 170-c. 236) held that the Antichrist would come from the tribe of Dan and would rebuild the Jewish temple in order to reign from it. He identified the Antichrist with the Beast out of the Earth from the book of Revelation…
The context should make it clear: the Beast out of the Earth is called the False Prophet. It is plainly stated that he will decieve with false miracles and introduce the Mark of the Beast. What seems to confuse worldly reason is that he teaches the people of the earth to worship the First Beast. To the unwise then, this must mean that the First Beast is the Antichrist. But this is a sophisticated display of misdirection and false humility. The Second Beast has apparently raised the First Beast (who was wounded mortally to the head) from the dead by this point, establishing his own spiritual superiority. In fact the Second Beast is in all ways superior to the first, except in warfare and political kingship. Let contemporary Jewish sources leave no doubt:

Mashiach ben Yossef
Jewish tradition speaks of two redeemers, each one called Mashiach. Both are involved in ushering in the Messianic era. They are Mashiach ben David and Mashiach ben Yossef.1
The term Mashiach unqualified always refers to Mashiach ben David (Mashiach the descendant of David) of the tribe of Judah. He is the actual (final) redeemer who shall rule in the Messianic age. All that was said in our text relates to him.
Mashiach ben Yossef (Mashiach the descendant of Joseph) of the tribe of Ephraim (son of Joseph), is also referred to as Mashiach ben Ephrayim, Mashiach the descendant of Ephraim.2 He will come first, before the final redeemer, and later will serve as his viceroy.3
The essential task of Mashiach ben Yossef is to act as precursor to Mashiach ben David: he will prepare the world for the coming of the final redeemer. Different sources attribute to him different functions, some even charging him with tasks traditionally associated with Mashiach ben David (such as the ingathering of the exiles, the rebuilding of the Bet Hamikdash, and so forth).4
The principal and final function ascribed to Mashiach ben Yossef is of political and military nature. He shall wage war against the forces of evil that oppress Israel. More specifically, he will do battle against Edom, the descendants of Esau.5 Edom is the comprehensive designation of the enemies of Israel,6 and it will be crushed through the progeny of Joseph. Thus it was prophesied of old, "The House of Jacob will be a fire and the House of Joseph a flame, and the House of Esau for stubble.." (Obadiah 1:18): "the progeny of Esau shall be delivered only into the hands of the progeny of Joseph."
The immediate results of the war will be disastrous: Mashiach ben Yossef will be killed. This is described in the prophecy of Zechariah, who says of this tragedy that "they shall mourn him as one mourns for an only child." (Zechariah 12:10).12 His death will be followed by a period of great calamities. These new tribulations shall be the final test for Israel, and shortly thereafter Mashiach ben David shall come, avenge his death, resurrect him, and inaugurate the Messianic era of everlasting peace and bliss.13

I open with 1John 2:18 NWT Bible. '' Young children, it is the last hour, and
just as you have heard that antichrist is coming, even now there have come
to be ''many'', antichrists. This was the last apostle of the 12 in the year 96
C.E. when he completed the writings of Revelation, near the end of the first
century. Notice, there were ''many antichrists'', known collectively as the
''antichrist''. From the time the Christian congregation was formed, therein
among the brothers, teachings contradicting the teachings of the Christ
gained a foothold contaminating with false pagan doctrines of the nations
and not of truth about God and Jesus Christ. So the apostasy arose to

GREAT THE WORLD EMPIRE OF FALSE RELIGIONS. There have come to be
many antichrists now … they went out from us, but they were not of our sort.''

Jesus is the Christ, (Messiah, anointed one). Not God! This is the antichrist!
