Elder Ephraim of Arizona, in this video, discusses the important role that suffering plays in the life of the Orthodox Christian. He compares the Christian faithful to gold, saying that like gold the faithful must undergo purification by means of fire. In the case of the christian, this fire is nothing else but the trials and tribulations they undergo during their lifetime. Elder Ephraim emphasizes that only by going through this spiritual fire can one truly posses the value they hope to have.
