A Concert commemorating the participation of Cyprus in the Greek War of Independence:
Cyprus paid a high price in blood soon after the Greek war for independence broke out on March 25, 1821 again the Ottoman Turkish oppressors.
As rumors of an uprising in Cyprus began to spread, the Turkish Pasha of Cyprus rounded up the Archbishop Kyprianos and the other three Metropolitans of Cyprus along with 470 lay leaders from around the towns and villages of the island and executed them, drowning in blood the spark of freedom that appeared in the hearts of the Cypriot Christians.
That, of course, did not prevent many of them from leaving for the mainland to join the rebel forces that carried on the struggle.
Today, the Church of Cyprus is seriously considering recognizing Archbishop Kyprianos as a Christian Martyr along with the other bishops and lay men who were unjustly slaughtered by the Turkish oppressors.
