Fr. Sophrony:
Those who were preparing to become musicians know that art requires the whole person.
When I was a painter, if I slept without dreams, then in the morning I didn’t know what to do because I needed to continue painting even during sleep.
And when I work at night in a dream, I get up in the morning and start with new energy and paint what I need.
So, I said many times that it is good for one to have an artistic personality so that our life is always inspired: we can suffer, maybe we lack all strength, but inspiration, like some kind of river of energy, constantly flows.
And then our life knows no laziness [acedia].
So you should all be artists in your [spiritual] life and keep your inspiration, because there is nothing in all creation greater than Christ and His teaching!
Everything else that humanity is proud of fades in comparison with what Christ gave us.

The thing is, human corrupt mentality is folded by tradition which unables free thinking.
Everything is about money!! We got enslaved doing things we don't like as a chore. We are raised to live in a material world ..think materialistic..living to enslave ourselves into a system we got obliged for.
Even marriage lost it's pure morals leading mankind to self satisfaction and fulfilling desires of flesh.
Freedom lost it's value due to the spread of corruption.
Artistic mind is the way we are created. We are made in the figure of God. We are made to be creative because God's blessed the flesh by pouring His divine soul upon man. We are made to be united. Unification means we are of one soul ,one mind, one tendency. So therefore art is born in our DNA.
When a person lacks artistic tendency this means he broke the bondage that connects him to the creator.
Many many people on earth discourage art preferring business and gaining money as a priority. Those have lost connections with the true God almighty. Those are pagan worshippers. Unfortunately!!!

I must say that, in my case, the love and obsession with the emotions that the few decades of dedicating to music and the piano made it very difficult to ease the passions of the senses ( addiction to the feelings provoked by music, classical and jazz). Had to completely redefine the role of music in my life since I've started to focus on Christ, on praying and all that entails. Music can agitate the passions, make you melancholic, nostalgic and obsessed.
