I was part of a church which perpetuated the belief of tongues being nonsensical babble, like you say. Young adults there would chase the experience of being 'drunk in the spirit', 'holy laughter', and hoped to be caught up to the 3rd heaven like Paul. By God's grace I met a true friend in that place who has walked alongside me to our true home, in Orthodoxy. Thank you for your obedience to our Lord, for speaking His Truth so that every word illuminates not yourself, but Him. You speak the Truth that I, and many others, had perhaps always felt, but never found in our evangelical background. We were taught enough about Christ to enter into baptism and a pursuit of repentance, but spiritual fathers like you are who we need leading us through. Bless you, father.
I belive that the Antichrist has come in several forms already. What you are describing is exactly that of the People's Temple, for example. Lead by James Jones, he gathered a thousand followers by performing false miracles, and took them to Guyanna to build a false temple. Then, when everything started to crumble around them, he all of his followers, including tens of children, commit suicide by taking flavor acid with cyanide. His plan failed then, but some day the Antichrist will come back and try again, and he will gain followers around the world. We must warn our children and our loved ones in preparation for this day.

I keep getting drawn back to eastern orthodoxy . Im traditional roman Catholic and I've studied hard but can't find a winner argument for orthodoxy . I've seen tons of hours of ubi petrus , jay dyer , Ybarra , james likoudas etc … And I still think Catholicism ( the faithful few remnenents in a chaotic modernist church ) Is the true Christian church , and I hope father sypridon can make more simple doctrinal arguments in favour of orthodoxy . How can one decipher ? I can't go on feelings ….I feel orthodoxy is true but thats nowhere near enough .

In summary: Baptism without repentance before confirmation or before full immersion when old enough for choosing to follow the Lord is not the same. The least of the holy spirit gifts granted to us which is from god is when others can hear their first language being spoken too when someone is speaking in tongues. More beneficial to newcomers visiting our churches to be welcomed better when seeing orthodoxy based worship practices so they while continuing to leave the agnostic life behind don't start wondering if those speaking in tongues is only drunk church goers along or worse yet — Some present might become deceived into practicing a distorted fake speaking in tongues while hoping that is going along with the same. While perhaps a church goer who goes there with Tourette's Syndrome to see real speaking in tongues might be more comfortable when not worried as much about being embarrassed by their symptoms while worrying about being judged for it could feel more accepted there a bit sooner that is not the majority newcomer's experience. And so the priest or minister who is leading worship needs to be careful when saying that speaking in tongues is permitted.

I got saved 6 years ago and had this amazing deep encounter and with the Holy Spirit which caused a deep repentance. I stopped smoking, threw away all my drugs, met a Christian woman, got married. A Christian told me I was not saved because I did not speak in tongues. I cried and prayed to God to speak in tongues but for many years never did. Once I believe I spoke truly in the tongues spoke about in the bible. Since then I sometimes practice speaking in tongues but still have my doubts as to whether what I am doing is of the Holy Spirit. I have only ever been around protestant circles and on the whole have been mostly dissatisfied with the churches teachings and lack of repentance. I believe the Christian life should be a repentant life seeking purity and shunning evil but have found that on the whole the churches I have been involved in are full of the world. I like the protestant notion of sticking to the teachings of the bible over traditions and find the venerating of saints, the kissing of icons etc difficult, much like many here feel about tongues but I like the honesty and integrity of the orthodox church. A genuine spiritual life. It is Definately growing on me.
