On the occasion of the 500-year Anniversary of the Reformation, FR. PANAYIOTIS PAPAGEORGIOU, Ph.D., was invited to Lutherstadt-Wittenburg in Germany, Ground Zero of the Protestant Reformation to offer a paper on the relationship of the Reformers with the Orthodox Church in the 16th century at a Conference “Reformation Institute” organized under the auspices of Ambrose University of Calgary, Canada. In the 16th century, two efforts were made by the Lutheran Reformers to communicate their positions to the Patriarchs of Constantinople Joasaph II and Jeremias II. A series of letters were finally exchanged. This is a very interesting topic that is as important today as it was then. Fr. Panayiotis offers an overview of the events leading to the exchange of letters and commends on the responses of Patriarch Jeremias. He also addresses the Calvinist Patriarch Cyril Lucaris. Fr. Panayiotis presented his paper on Monday, May 8, 2017 at Lutherstadt-Wittenburg in Germany to a group of Protestants. Subscribe and share!

One very interesting omission from this presentation is there is no mention of the most critical role of the Eastern Church played in the Reformation…namely it was as the Turks closed in to sack Constantinople, that Eastern monks fled to the West with their Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. These manuscripts served as a corrective to the mistakes in the Latin translation known as the Vulgate. It was as Luther interacted with these manuscripts that he realized that Rome was wrong about Purgatory. Jerome had made a mistake in his translation and the Greek manuscripts made that clear. It was finding this error that helped to put him on the path to the 95 thesis and the rest.
@46:58 It is kind of funny to hear him making the exact same sort of argument that the Roman Catholic church makes about the interpretation of scripture. The only difference is which group of the traditions of men you want to listen to; those of the East or of the West… In making this argument you actually make one of the strongest arguments FOR Sola Scriptura. Both East and West claim to be the possessors of the truth and yet they both change/add to/annul scripture.
@1:07:21 He uses the examples that show what happens when we get away from Sola Scriptura. That is when everybody does what they want. That is when the RC church changes things as they see fit. That is when the EO church states things are a mystery that Paul says were a mystery in the OT and now revealed in Jesus Christ. That is when the Anglican change the creed or allow a Muslin to lead part of their service.
As an Orthodox Christian from the Middle East, my wish is that all Orthodox Christians unite. There must be a dialogue between the so called chalcedonian and non chalcedonian Orthodox churches. That will be a good start.
Protestant reformation in Russia Orthodox Church happened under the church reform of Peter the Great. Church lost its independence and become one of the state departments under total control of the Tsar. Each member of the Synod had to swear an oath of allegiance to the Tsar and recognized him as infallible and the only God's representative on earth.
This comment section clearly demonstrates the need for further reformation. The Reformation and the doctrines of reformed Christianity is highly underrepresented by modern day “Protestantism”.
Christianity is not Creed it is a Person …. Christ, if you by faith Repent of your sins and accept Christ as your Lord and savior you are a Christian….The thief on the cross never belong to a man's dogma but only believe andJesus said today thou shall be with me in Paradise the thief skipped man's foolishness and embraced only Christ….stop arguing man's views and only Believe in Christ.
Dear Orthodox brothers,
I agree that catholicism misbehaved towards you, abused its position, betrayed and attacked you. We are guilty of that. But to simplify think that reformation as an attempt to return to the eastern and "ursprüngliche" Tradition is not the case. In the West, there were constant attempts to redefine, refine the dogma of the Church as there were many sects in the West. The goal was like the Oeucunenical councils to clarify the divine with the latin language to people who did not know greek. And yes unfortunately it does lead to sometimes less clarity. And as we know the greek language is structured around philosophers with brilliant concepts. Latin had yet to produce these philosophers. Please see that protestantism rejects the love for the saints, the importance of Mary, the Holy Icons, the transubstantiation and more. Elements common to the East and the west and Protestantism kept issue questions like the filioque or predestination. I do not want to find excuses but the"Renaissance" is already a first hit and win from gnostics who then officially became the freemasons. Something that the eastern Church will encounter producing great martyrs in the 20th century.
May the Holy Spirit unite us in the Body of our Lord. Glory to the Father to the Son and to the Holy Spirit unto the ages and ages. Amen.
On board with most Orthodox practices. Intercession from the saints is probably the biggest obstacle to me pursuing it further. If there was an orthodox church without intercession then let me know
Enjoyable lecture
I really tried to come to Christianity with an open mind and my "intuition." I've found that it aligns quite a bit with the Eastern Orthodox
That is the way forward .. preach the gospel to the whole world as commanded by our Lord God Jesus Christ son of God. God bless Orthodox church.
I don`t mean to increase division but this is my opinion as protestant after learn our church history. My opinion, protestant must give orthodox and catholic chance to explain what is their teaching. Listen first and judge their biblical view. It`s stupid to reject something without you carefully learn about it.
His historical exegesis was amazing. I think that he expressed Orthodoxy very well!
In other words…politics entered and had overruled the Constantine's Judeo-Christian legacy. The very same thing that has created Christianity, divided it …POLITICS! hOWEVER! dON'T FORGET …church was an integral part of Meddle age's POLITICS ,back in the day.
I did not expect to see John Wesley 😮
I don’t know why he would say we are the first Protestants that’s just bad Protestantism is of the devil and is no where near biblical
I've basically been Arminian for almost 30 years of my Christian life.
Starting towards the end of 2019
I started studying scripture more intently, mostly to refute Augustinian Calvaniatic philosophy. I've slowly come to realize that saints are chosen "In Him" before the foundation of the world, basically for service (to be Holy and blameless before Him) and bot chosen for salvation unilaterally nor according to Gods foreknowledge of those who would trust in Christ.
I've recently been engulfed in studying scripture and watching videos in trying to get out of the brainwashed idea I've always had of the western idea of original sin and total depravity.
I'm still struggling with this concept, it seems as though I'm in an extreme minority. I've just recently found videos like this and may not agree with everything, but I'm learning. Does anyone have any other recommended videos / books?
From an almost totally former Western Prostestant Arminian lol
Thanks
The Whore of Babylon Western Roman Church created Islam, to kill the christains of the East
This was a very educational breakdown of the differences and similarities between the Protestant and Orthodox Churches. My views haven’t changed from Southern Baptist but I think I understand why so many other Protestant churches are getting infiltrated and taken over by cults whereas the Orthodox seem more organized.
Whooh and John Wesley pops up. Undoubtedly one of the most significant figures in protestant church history. Someone whose life we need to study.
Fr. Panayiotis bless! Would you please post a link to this paper?
Wow! Now it all comes together.
There is a strong Orthodox Church in India 💠🏥💒
This is a great video, I'd like to know your opinion on the Methodist church's doctrine being mostly formulated in orthodox theology?
John Wesley was famous for rejecting augustine, perhaps if the world wasn't so separated at the time he would havespread Orthodoxy to the west and America?
Excellent scholarship. This video covers many topics over time. Many of which could be a basis for further dissertation. Well done Father Panayioti.
Ok wait so you're defending using leavened bread? Real weird hill to die on
Well, I'm third generation Pentecostal, living in an area surrounded by Lutherans, was never impressed by the Catholics, but the Orthodox I find really interesting. I'm not entirely sure why.
I was raised Protestant, and did not know the Eastern Church existed. My journey into understanding was a very long one. I know now that Christianity cannot be reformed, any more than Christ can be reformed.
The Methodist Church in Hong Kong (香港循道衛理聯合教會)uses the creed without Filioque in these recent years!!!!
