The Elders and Saints of the Orthodox Church have always discussed sickness as a means of spiritual healing for mankind, that is allowed by God. Elder Cleopa of Romania in this sermon describes how through man’s sinful actions, the devil has more authority over him and can cause greater grievances. Elder Cleopa discusses why this is allowed by God, saying that God prefers one’s body to be troubled and to have his soul saved, then one’s body to be healthy and his soul full of sickness and perversion.
