St. John of Damascus, one of the great Church Fathers, lived in a time of much change and turmoil. In a time when Orthodox doctrine was maturing, St. John confronted challenges from both outside and inside the church. From without, there was the rise of Islam to confront as St. John became the first Christian writer to approach the new faith in a systematic manner with a defense of the divinity of Christ against Islamic claims. From within, St. John defended the veneration of holy icons against the claims and attacks of the Iconoclasts. Watch our video to learn more about St. John of Damascus, also known as John Damascene, to learn more about his life and times.
St. John was also known as John Damascene and as Χρυσορρόας / Chrysorrhoas (literally “streaming with gold”—i.e., “the golden speaker”), was a (Eastern) Roman monk and priest. Born and raised in Damascus c. 675 or 676, he died at his monastery, Mar Saba, near Jerusalem on 4 December 749.

ISUS..JESUSCHRISHT…HIRISTOS TURKEY HIRISTOS HIRISTOS TURKEY HALEL LUYAL
Ex muslim here and became orthodox Christian proud. From Turkey.
You're spelling Islam wrong. Izlam is not the same spelling as Islam.
There are no Holy Icons in Islaam. If there seem to be it is because some non believer has set it up. Icons are shirk – false religion. Al-Islaam has no falsities in it, they are Haram. All religions were once this way, no images of Allah until the hands of humans fashioned them. No images of Angels, all shirk.
Thanks for this video.i read about him during my visit to Syria years ago. Greetings from a swedish revert
Student from Istanbul here! I'm muslim but this was very insightful and helped me with my studies, thank you
The greater authority of these sees in relation to others was tied to their political and ecclesiastical prominence; all were located in important cities and regions of the Roman Empire and were important centers of the Christian Church. Rome, Alexandria and Antioch were prominent from the time of early Christianity, while Constantinople came to the fore upon becoming the imperial residence in the 4th century. Thereafter it was consistently ranked just after Rome. Jerusalem received a ceremonial place due to the city's importance in the early days of Christianity.
A question about St Johns rebuttal of Islam calling Christians associators:
"Incarnation is a stumbling block for Islam"
"Christian claims that Jesus is God and part of the Holy Trinity
leads Muslims to call them associators
which is a form of idolatry that associates anything else with God"
St.John's response:
"As long as you say that Christ is the word of God and Spirit,
why do you accuse us of being associators?
For the word and the Spirit is inseparable from that in which it naturally has existence.
Therefore, if the word of God is in God
then it is obvious he is God,
If however he is outside of God
God is without word and Spirit,
consequently by avoiding the introduction of an associate with God,
you have mutilated him.
It would be far better for you to say he has an associate
than to mutilate him
as if you were dealing with a stone or piece of wood
or some other inanimate object
thus you speak untruly when you call us associators
we retort by calling you mutilators of God"
I don't really understand St Johns argument about associators vs mutilators. Isn't it written in the bible that when Gentiles (non-believers) act in accordance with biblical law, it shows that they have the word of God written on their hearts? In the case of prophets, wasn't the word revealed to them by divine revelation, the same way it could have hypothetically been revealed to Jesus? I'm not arguing for or against Islam or Christianity, but the quote "Therefore, if the word of God is in God
, then it is obvious he is God" doesn't make sense to me. Could someone elaborate?
Thank you for this video! It is well-researched and beautifully-constructed!

May St John the Damascene pray for my family’s conversion from the Great Heresy of Islam
I'm loving these videos of the Eastern Fathers and saints. Us Maronites need to get back in touch with the East.
Christian and Jews who able expose Islam especially who know arabics, so we know why they targeting us
I've often heard because Islam was favoured by God they were able to conquer Christian's. But did not Satan offer our Lord dominion over the countries of the world? And our Lord rebuked him
It would be very good if a German translation were also possible.
These are just worshipping crosses and saints strictly forbidden in christinaty as well
But religion just like history
Orthodox religion did not exist in the time of St John of Damascus ….. It Is a modern revisionist twisting of history…. The Iconoclasts obtained a condemnation of John at the Council of Hieria in 754 that was reversed at the Second Council of Nicaea in 787 ….Side note at the second council of nicea and Pope Adrian confirmed the decrees of the council. St John of Damascus was Catholic.
Excellent travail, je m’abonne
Greetings in Christ. I think they are doing a great job in spreading the Orthodox faith. I hope you will examine the possibility of allowing me to translate the audio of this video into Spanish and post it on my channel in order to bring this excellent content to the Spanish-speaking Orthodox faithful.
Ridiculous tale based on myths created over 200 years after Muhamed. Islam and Muslims are mentioned, but who are the sources to confirm that they were Muslims?
Thanks be to God for St. John.
Excellent ☦️
What does the writer of this script – together with the reader, for that matter – IMAGINE that "fortuitous" means? Not "fortunate", let us hope? In other words, let us not bring ILLITERACY into the expounding of our ORTHODOX FAITH. Christian Orthodoxy, the peak of world wisdom and divinely revealed TRUTH has NEVER been illiterate, nor will ever be.
Islam is intrinsicly anti-Christian
