It matters only because it is a part of the identity of an "Orthodox". However if you crossed yourself from the left to the right your not heretical, it is still the sign of the cross.
YESS !! from right to left
The Romans, Lutherans (some of them) and Anglo-Catholics do it from left to right; the Eastern Rite Catholics and the Orthodox as you well know do it from right to left. While I am a Roman Catholic I use the Byzantine mode.
The Celtic Christians did it from left to right, along with the same hand position as the Orthodox
