Father Panayiotis Papageorgiou speaks upon our visit to The Monastery of the Temptations (Greek: Μοναστήρι των Πειρασμών, Arabic: دير القرنطل‎ Deir al-Quruntal), a Greek Orthodox monastery located in Jericho, Palestine. It was built on the slopes of the Mount of Temptations 350 meters above sea level, situated along a cliff overlooking the city of Jericho and the Jordan Valley. The earliest monastery was constructed by the Byzantines in the 6th century AD above the cave traditionally said to be where Jesus spent forty days and forty nights fasting and praying while He was been tempted by Satan, about three kilometers northwest of Jericho. The monastery receives its name from the mountain which the early Christians referred to as the “Mount of the Temptations”. This location was identified by St. Helena (mother of St. Constantine the Great) as one of the “holy sites” during her pilgrimage in 326 AD.
