This is the third episode from my interview with Orthodox Archpriest Alexander Rentel, Chancellor of the OCA, scholar and professor of #Orthodox canon law at St. Vladimir’s #Seminary.
In this episode, Father Alexander explains what it means for a church to be “canonical” or “uncanonical.”

Perhaps the Father may want to reconsider his statement about Constantinople which no longer exists. It was replaced by Istanbul which is not even the capital city of the former Ottoman empire. Also, many are now troubled by the conduct of the Patriarch from Istanbul, communing with Latin Papists and heretical churches in Ukraine.
Very informative! Of course, it reminds me of how much I will need to read and stuff over the years as my children get older and I have the time. Thanks for this video!
More or less the same way I understand Orthodox Ecclessiology- the Constantinople part was unnecessary though.
I hate to be this guy, but Fr. Alexander really ought to be careful with how he talks about Constantinople. In this day and age, it is VERY well known that there are churches in communion with Constantinople that are indeed heretical, and without real hierarchs. In particular, the OCU is hardly recognized as being Orthodox by any other church, and is explicitly rejected by the Jerusalem, Antiochian, Serbian, and Russian churches, just to name a few of the important ones. Great video, except for this very important point, which, today, is no minor matter. The wonderful thing about the structure of the Church is the communal aspect. Recognition by one church or another means nothing, if the communion of churches in general rejects it! This is because no church holds more authority than another and no authority OVER another. Thanks for the regular content!
So it seems that being “in communion” is the key factor, rather than formal ecclesiastical acceptance?
May an ex-husband (civil divorce) have the ability to prevent a woman from receiving a divorce in a Spiritual Court or will does his signature on the civil certificate suffice? Does any ex-spouse receive notice of an impending Spiritual Court proceeding?
Yo tampoco me he enterado de nada.
