Very insightful, bought your book after seeing your last video. Look forward to reading it after finishing Beowulf which I ironically started after seeing you talk about it. God bless
Yes!
This is old ideas or rather obvious to me anyways: I’m old guy… I have always thought Star Wars, novel Dune, Harry Potter , on and on would be highly influential in generating interest in priestly and religious life … it would cause folks to take a “relook” at the real thing. At least, the genre would require readers and film views to have more respect on the liturgy.
I was raised a Jehovah’s Witness since birth. I wasn’t allowed to read anything not approved/printed by the Watchtower Society. I left, and now I’m Orthodox.
But I’m still trying to catch up on the idea that we can read about these subjects. Especially things about magic. I’m not saying I’m right. Just that I’m TRYING TO UNDERSTAND. Thanks for this video. Please help me understand more? Particularly about witches/magic, like in the Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe.
Thank you!
I used to love comic books as a kid. Taught me to love to read. I'm Orthodox now because it's so interesting just like those comics years ago.
got to disagree on this has anybody read what the church fathers say about fantasy and Imagination? A lot of young intellectuals coming to Orthodoxy by way of literature and what not and that's okay but Orthodoxy doesn't need any Innovations or clever ways to lure people in….
According to some Orthodox saints, imagination is not good. Demons operate in our imagination, that is way we use icons.
My thought on fantasy is that it should be aligned with patterns which are lived out among the people who live them. For example, when we tell the Santa myth, it reflects the pattern of yuletide gift giving. Fantasy becomes a problem when the myth becomes a substitute for naturally produced culture, which is of particular problem in the age of mass media.
Can you fix the audio please? You are i guess in a big empty room…well that how it sounds. Echo.
