St. Catherine is one of those women of antiquity who stood out in Roman society at the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th centuries.
In spite of the fact that women during those days had very few rights, once in a while a really gifted woman would rise up and stun the masses not only with her beauty but also with her intelligence, education and wisdom. Such was Catherine, the Great Martyr, still remembered today as an amazing Christian woman.
The early Christians, by recounting her life, presented and emphasized the value of the woman, who is also made in the image of God, but, at the same time, sought to correct the many errors of the pagans and convert them to the Christian Faith.
