The third episode in our “Chronicles of the Desert” series introduces us to Abba Bessarion. Abba Bessarion lived in Egypt in the fourth century. He withdrew into the desert at a young age and was initiated into the angelic life by St. Anthony the Great. He was later a disciple of St. Macarius the Great before becoming a wandering solitary. The following video was based on sayings collected by his disciple Doulas and recorded in “The Sayings of the Desert Fathers.” One of his sayings was that “The monk ought to be as the Cherubim and the Seraphim: all eye.” No doubt he became “all eye” through his strict asceticism and by following the commandments of Christ to the fullest.
