“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Phil 4: 4)
Meditation:
The word of God insists that joy prevail in the life of a Christian. Christ desired that “your joy be complete” (John 15: 11).
St. Paul urges believers to always rejoice and considers joy to be a fruit of the Holy Spirit. The spiritual joy of a Christian is not noisy merrymaking; one can be joyful even in the midst of sorrow. There is an internal, sublime joy, which flows from a spiritual source, which is inaccessible to the outside world.
But not everyone has this source. For the most part, people’s disposition changes depending on circumstances, rising and falling, like mercury under the influence of the atmosphere. We must try to achieve this internal joy, regardless of external circumstances. One way is unconditional submission to God’s will, another is serving one’s neighbor. Only by learning complete self-renunciation, learning to “serve”, and not to wish to be served, can we have true, deep joy. Each act of love and self-renunciation increases this joy and lets us understand the true purpose of life.

«Радуйтесь всегда в Господе, и еще говорю: радуйтесь» (Флп. 4:4)
Слово Божие настаивает на том, чтобы радость преобладала в жизни христианина. Христос желал, чтобы «радость ваша была совершенна» (Ин. 15:11).
Апостол Павел убеждает верующих всегда радоваться и причисляет радость к плодам Духа Святого. Духовная радость христианина не есть шумное веселие; можно и среди горя быть радостным. Это есть внутренняя, возвышенная радость, истекающая из духовного источника, недоступного внешнему миру.
Но не всякий обладает этим источником. Большею частью расположение людей меняется, смотря по обстоятельствам, подымаясь и опускаясь, как ртуть под влиянием атмосферы. Мы должны стремиться к достижению этой внутренней радости, независимой от внешних обстоятельств. Один способ есть безусловная покорность воле Божией, другой – служение ближнему. Только научившись полному самозабвению, научившись «служить», и не искать, чтобы нам служили, можем мы иметь в себе истинную, глубокую радость. Каждый подвиг любви и самоотвержения усиливает эту радость и дает нам понять настоящую цель жизни.
