I'll venture to say that he (the speaker) is right about Luther; I've been led to believe that "reunification and harmony", (not "further schism and dischord") was his goal… He was very influenced by Orthodoxy, but, (from what I have been taught), he had a problem with his marriage situation since he took a wife (a nun no less) AFTER his ordination… correct me if I'm wrong; I'm not "married" to the idea, (lol)… it's only what I've heard… I have also heard modern-day Lutherans say things like this: "The best thing about The VIRGIN Mary is who Her Son is"… From an Orthodox viewpoint, that is a very rudimentary understanding of who She is, of course, but it's not incorrect, it's just oversimplified… many Lutheran and Episcopalian/Anglican people are totally dazzled and enamored with Orthodoxy; even to the point of "conversion"! (Wasn't Kalistos Ware once an actively protesting-Protestant?)
OK, I want to be clear: I do not have very much affection for Northern European images of Our Lord… (Jesus was NOT Norwegian), but in my personal experience, Lutherans (and SOME Anglicans) are by far the LEAST offensive of all Protestant denominations… I used to be forced to attend a Quaker "church" when I was a kid… yuck! It doesn't get more radically Protestant (without losing Christ altogether) than that… I believe there were true Christians there, but talk about "throwing the baby away with the bath water"; those guys take the cake! (oh, wait, they don't believe in "cake"… cake is a sin! lol) It's the church of "nothing": their favorite flavor is "plain" and their favorite color is "clear" … I'll never forget the awful smell of that place: dirty diapers and cheap coffee mixed with Lysol and BenGay… whoof! I'll always prefer a nose-full of Orthodoxy any day; incense and perfume and flowers… smells that make me happy to be worshipping.
