His Holiness Orthodox Metropolitan of Belgrade Serbian Patriarch Irenaeus has welcomed president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin at Belgrade’s st. Sava Cathedral. The Belgrade Patriarchate, Serbian and Russian governments are together building the most impressive and largest mosaic in the world.
The altar area will be finished this year when the Serbian Orthodox Church will be celebrating 800th anniversary of it’s Autocephaly from the Constantinople’s Patriarchate. The entire Cathedral should be decorated by the end of 2020.
Project is led by Nikolai Muhin the People’s Artist of Russia, who has great experience in decorating Cathedrals and churches, the most important one being the Patriarchal Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Over 100 Russian, Belarus and Serbian artists are working on creating almost 20 000m2 in total of pure mosaic.
St. Sava church will be used as Patriarchal Cathedral for the Serbian Patriarchs and with impressive underground Crypt, as their final resting place.
