Amazing story. I have been to Greece and visited the monasteries in Meteora perching on top of the giant stone pillars. It was also very stunning but already open to the world. This place is almost untouched and mystical. I hope I could visit here someday and experience how to live and eat clean for a day.

The beauty of simplicity and silence
The mountain is dedicated to one woman and one woman alone the mother of Christ, those Monks keep that mountain a sacred place of veneration and religious contemplation. I honestly do not see an issue in that anymore than anyone would see an issue with a convent being an exclusively female organization, especially when there is the issue of distraction. By the way, I'm not an Orthodox Christian (although my name last name might suggest otherwise) I'm merely stating my acceptance and agreement with the idea that there are organizations within the broader religious communities which are gender exclusive for the sake of piety.
Athos: The guardians of Christianity, even with respect to the Eastern Churches lest apostasy raises its head there too. The decentralized nature of the Eastern Church is one of its greatest strengths. When one jurisdiction ( be it national church or otherwise) strays from doctrine others are there to call them out. Even the spiritual head, the Ecumenical Patriarch is constrained, no Papal fiat here.
