As a historian of the Early Church, I spend most of my time trying to work out what was going on by reading back from what people are told not to do much more than the positive instructions which are infrequent. It always amazes me quite how big the arguments get over what did and did not happen based on the tiniest fragments of evidence often with explicit exclusion of any acknowledgement of oral tradition.
